Saint Lucia banana farmers encouraged to maintain consistent exports

Saint Lucia banana farmers have been encouraged to maintain consistency in the supply and quality of their export crop. This encouragement came from Operations Manager of the National Fairtrade Organisation, Stephen Best. It was reported in a Facebook post of Saint Lucia’s Agriculture Minister, Ezechiel Joseph.

Best spoke on the heels of a recent trade mission to the United Kingdom where new opportunities and partnerships were forged to ensure the Saint Lucia brand of bananas has more visibility on the UK market. The French market was targeted as well.

The Fairtrade Organisation official explained that the Ministry of Agriculture and by extension the Government of Saint Lucia  are employing strategies to effectively bolster economic activity within the banana industry. He was quoted as saying that once farmers respond in kind to the efforts being made by agriculture leaders in attaining and sustaining new markets, the entire country stands to reap the benefits.

For 2019, the Banana Productivity Improvement Project has  earmarked about 300 acres of land to come into new production.
