The agreement to send Pears to China, which will be very important for Chile's fruit sector, was endorsed by President Sebastian Piñera on his last trip to China.
"The important thing is that we can now negotiate the entry of citrus fruits to China. We finished negotiating the entry of European pears to China and sent the first container there so now we can start working to open the Chinese market for citrus fruits. We hope that when the President of China visits our country, he, and President Sebastian Piñera, sign the opening of the Chinese market for Chilean citrus fruits," stated the Minister of Agriculture, Antonio Walker.
The President of the Association of Fruit Exporters of Chile, ASOEX, Ronald Bown, said that the entry of Chilean pears into China was "a very important milestone, from the point of view of the activities that we develop with the authorities of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Livestock Agricultural Service. Now we have a new market for this fruit, which we mainly sold to Europe. Moreover, its a market where the population is eager to consume fresh products."
Last Friday, the country sent its first symbolic shipment of pears to China.
Minister Walker thanked all the people who have worked hard to strengthen the commercial relationship between Chile and China. "We have great news today: China is opening its doors to us. I'd like to especially thank the ambassador of China in Chile, the Chinese health authority, Minister Ni, the Chinese Customs Minister, and President Piñera, who - in his last trip to China- signed this great agreement, which will be very important for the development of fruit growing in Chile," he said.
In turn, the Political Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Chile, Zhou Yi, spoke about the good work between the two countries. "The Chilean pear is of very high quality and I am sure that it will delight consumers in China. The export of pears is a symbol of fruit exports to China and the Chilean pear will become a new Chile product in the Chinese market, along with cherries, blueberries, wines, all of which are very famous products in China. We want to thank all the workers, the officials, the businessmen, and especially the two presidents, who have had a very good dialogue that opened the door to the broadest and most fruitful cooperation between our countries, which have had a good relationship for a long time."
