On Sunday, June 9, on the occasion of its tenth anniversary, the Spanish cooperative Unica Group has prepared the world's largest gazpacho in Almeria and beat a Guinness World Record. With this challenge, the cooperative has aimed to "showcase Almeria as what it really is: the capital of Spanish and European agriculture," as reported by the mayor of Almeria, Ramón Fernández-Pacheco.
Fernández-Pacheco, together with the president of the Unica Group, José Martínez Portero, and representatives of the Anda and AECC associations, met last week in order to advertize the event.
Besides being huge, the gazpacho also served a good cause, since the proceeds from the 1 Euro admission price will go to the Association of Children with Disabilities of Almeria and the Spanish Association Against Cancer.
The previous record holder was Lisbon, with a 5,000 liter gazpacho. Almeria's has reached the 9,800 liters and contained 6,000 kilos of tomatoes, 200 kilos of cucumber, 200 kilos of onions, 300 kilos of red pepper and 550 liters of olive oil.
