As reported by Asaja Córdoba, the citrus campaign has been "disastrous" in terms of prices at origin. The association blames this situation on the overlap with the productions from third countries, especially after the trade agreement between the European Union and South Africa.
15 to 20% of the production has yet to be harvested, but in this last part of the campaign, a kilo of oranges of the Valencia Late variety reaches a price at origin of between 0.11 and 0.14 € , and € 0.09 in the case of the Blanca group for the industry. According to the Lonja of the Chamber of Commerce, in the same period of the previous year, the Valencia Late variety had a price at origin of between 0.24 and 0.29 €, and 0.24 € in the case of the Blanca group for the industry.
This situation is causing heavy losses to producers, who in many cases have sold the fruit for prices that stand below the production costs, set at 0.15 € / kg in official studies.
One of the most striking aspects is that "this sharp drop in prices at origin has not been reflected in consumer prices, which have remained similar to those of the previous year," reaching up to 2 € in some supermarkets of Cordoba. This is something that Asaja already denounced with the free distribution of 6,000 kilos of oranges.
