Developments in the lychee industry were more or less settled by the beginning of June and people in the industry were able to make accurate estimates of market conditions this year. The lychee from Guangdong and Hainan already entered the market in large volumes. The overall lychee production volume in 2019 is significantly smaller than in 2018. The scarcity makes lychee expensive. The rising price of Chinese lychee is a general trend.
Beiliu County in Yulin, Guangxi, has three production areas distributed in the north, the center, and the south. The production area in the south includes such villages as Liujing and Shiwo. The main lychee varieties there are Concubine Smile and White Sugar Jar lychee. These are early-season varieties. The production volume of these two varieties is smaller than in 2018, but around the same level as in 2017. Lychee from the southern production areas entered the market around the same time as lychee from nearby Maoming in Guangdong. Their purchase price is around 10-20 yuan [1.45-2.89 USD] per kg. Inquiry reveals that the overall production volume in Yulin greatly declined this year. The price increase is therefore growing. The overall income of farmers is not growing much and in some cases farmers earned less than last year.
