Costa Rica's State Phytosanitary Service has prohibited the entry of any craft or object made with raw materials extracted from bananas or plantains to prevent an outbreak of Fusarium in the country.
Any product made with dried banana fibers from diseased plants, such as a hat, a bag, or any other craft, is capable of transporting spores of the disease.
"There are no known efficient chemical measures, the best management tool is the prevention of the entrance of the plague, therefore the collaboration of the citizens is vital in this work," said Nelson Morera, the head of Phytosanitary Control.
