New potatoes from the Palatinate expected to be available in retail stores mid-June

Start of harvest for 'Palatine Grumbeere'

Since the tubers of the 2019 season were initially cleared in smaller quantities, these products can initially mostly be found in farm shops and at weekly markets in the region.

"Over the past two to three weeks, the slightly too cold temperatures have slowed down the start of the harvest and since last week it starts again," said Hartmut Magin, chairman of the "Pfälzer Grumbeere" producer group, on Monday. Field inspections have shown a very good quality of tubers.

From the beginning of June, more and more of the 300 producers of 'Pfälzer Grumbeere' are expected to gradually start the early potato harvest in the Palatinate and the neighboring regions in the southwest.

As of mid-June, according to Magin, the 'Palatine Originals' are also available nationwide in retail stores. Slow cold weather and some late frost caused the growth to be very good this spring.

Daily amount around 3,000 tons
At the peak of harvest at the end of June and beginning of July, the daily amount of the producer group is more than 3,000 tonnes of 'Palatine Grumbeere'. The acreage amounts to approximately 4,000 hectares, on around 1,200 hectares grow the 'Grumbeere' this year under foil or fleece.
