Meerbusch potato farm starts the early potato harvest

"Transition of new potatoes to main crop is expected to be seamless"

On the Meerbusch Kartoffelhof, this year's new potato harvest began the day before yesterday. For the new company in the field of agriculture and direct marketing, it will also be the first full season after the takeover in 2018. Managing Director Stefanie de Kok and her husband Riccardo Bär, who is responsible for cultivation, are particularly proud of the start of the season on their farm and marketing operation.

Fresh early potatoes (Nandina variety)

In total, eight varieties will be cultivated on an area of 25 hectares, which will gradually come into production. The season started with the two early varieties Annabelle and Nandina. "Annabelle is our main variety in the early range with about 60 percent. Although the predominantly firm potato Nandina has a slightly higher yield, we have planted it somewhat less than the Annabelle. Every second day, we harvest as needed, after which the tubers end up almost exclusively in regional supermarkets. The rest goes to local restaurants."

The first Annabelle potatoes sometimes were quite small. Sizes of the Nandinas, however, fit in perfectly with the usual 2kg bag. When it comes to packaging, there was the recent switch to paper bags with biodegradable mesh in the viewing window. These are available in various sizes.

For the entire new potato campaign you can hardly say anything yet: But the first omens have been particularly good, commented de Kok. "We have now found the entry and the first goods to the food retail can market." In addition, the connection to the storage season had been almost perfect. Just a week ago, the last stored potatoes were delivered from the cold store. "Now the campaign is going smoothly and we can usually deliver fresh tubers from our own fields until the main autumn harvest."

The Kartoffelhof focuses on the cultivation, storage and packaging of its own potato products. On more than 3 ha, red and yellow onions are grown as well. The assortment is rounded off with different types of lettuce and kohlrabi.
