"Chinese watermelons will gradually arrive on the market in large volumes in the coming months as the watermelon season officially begins. In some production areas the new watermelon season has already begun. Some production areas, however, for example in Jiangsu and Anhui, suffered from extreme weather conditions in late February and early March.
Excessive rainfall harmed the growth of watermelon seedlings, which in turn delayed the beginning of the watermelon production season in those areas. The Unicorn watermelons from production areas in Jiangsu and Anhui are expected to enter the market in large volumes in early June around the same time as the Sweet Kiss watermelons from Yurun watermelon plantation in Shanxi. This will certainly have an effect on the price of watermelons in June. At the same time, the volume of watermelons arriving on the Chinese market early in the season is relatively small as a result of the weather conditions and the price is therefore quite high. Farmers who were able to supply the watermelon market early in the season made a healthy profit." This is according to Fan Zhiqiang of Yuncheng Yurun Agricultural Plantation Cooperation (hereafter 'Yurun').
Yurun has watermelon plantations in various cities in order to supply the watermelon market with a variety of watermelons over an extended period of time. Mr. Fan introduced the company: "The main supply season of watermelons from Meilan in Hainan began on April 10th and concludes on July 20th. The supply of Sweet Kiss watermelons from the Yurun watermelon plantation in Shanxi began on May 20th. The supply season of Sweet Kiss watermelons could last until late June when the supply of watermelons from Shaanxi and Gansu takes over. The supply of watermelons from Shaanxi and Gansu lasts until September. Yurun is able to supply watermelons all year round because of plantations throughout the country in Yunnan, Guangdong, Hainan, Jiangsu, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Hebei, Beijing, and Shandong."
