The harvesting of the first quantities of Black Magic at Giovanni Bellassai Srl (Mazzarrone, Sicily) started on 23rd May 2019, 8 days later than in previous campaigns.

"The grapes are taking their time. This period should be warm and sunny but the rain and cold temperatures have stressed vineyards causing confusion," explains Lorenzo Bellassai (in the photo above), owner of the company together with his father Giovanni.
"The produce in greenhouses maintained the delay we had hypothesized during blossoming, but quality is good. We are in line with other companies, and prices seem rather good as they are medium-high despite the pressure on the market."
"Many still care about price over quality, but we have chosen to wait to make available grapes that are flavorful and worthy of being called Sicilian. Starting on week 23, we will start interesting activities with retailers and foreign clients. 80% of the grapes we commercialize are destined to be exported."
"We expect the interest to increase in Italy during the first few weeks of harvesting while, abroad, we will have best results where overseas grapes will no longer be available."
Bellassai's core business is seeded grapes. "We will start with the Victoria and Black magic early varieties then, in late June, we can continue with Red Globe and Palieri. Expectations are positive - weather permitting, of course."
