Jan Gütinger, Obst-Gütinger UG:

"Pineapples are big right now"

"At the moment, pineapples are doing very well and my customers have just rediscovered them," says Jan Gütinger from OBST - Gütinger UG in Rietheim-Weilheim. "The premium products from Costa Rica are exceptionally sweet and they are certainly well received."

The fruits are sold in one piece or in half, at the company's market stall. They are offered along with other summer classics: "Our top items are asparagus and tunnel strawberries, as well as tomatoes from the Netherlands, and of course the pineapples." Even the mixed to bad weather, which still prevails in many parts of Germany, does not seem to deter customers.

"People are coming from far away to buy fresh pineapples, and although the product is currently priced rather high, this is accepted. This is related to the excellent taste of the varieties: we are currently selling Ana'dou pineapples and Linda Premium Golds." RedDesiree tomatoes from RedStar -from the Netherlands- are also doing quite well.

The strawberries that Gütinger has on offer come exclusively from the Kaiserstuhl. "There were even night frosts last week, so fleeces were put on overnight and taken off again during the day. The fruit suffered from that, so I prefer the tunnel goods and eagerly await the start of the open field harvest."

Obst-Gütinger is a true family business, which was founded in 1896 and is now run by the fifth generation manager Jan Gütinger. At the company headquarters in Rietheim-Weilheim, regional and extra-regional fruits, exotic fruits, vegetables and nuts from conventional and organic cultivation are on offer. The marketer's specialty consists of Bosnian plums, whose season will begin in late June. He imports these himself and sells them to various customers in Germany and the Netherlands.
