China: Price of mangoes from Baise may rise significantly

Mangoes from Baise in Guangxi will arrive on the market in less than a month. The temperature in mango production areas was relatively high in early February. Many mango trees produced flowers one week earlier than in recent years. In early spring, however, production areas suffered from a cold current. The temperature fell and rainfall increased. These were unfavorable conditions for the pollination of mango flowers. Many flowers therefore did not develop into fruit. Many mango trees in Youjiang river valley and "Liang Yi mountain" produced only a small volume of mangoes. This phenomenon affected all mango varieties, which is something rarely seen in previous years.

The Baise Mango Research Center surveyed more than 35 mango plantations in the area. Data shows that the volume of mangoes on the trees is reasonable, but the volume of regular-sized mangoes is much smaller than in recent years. Most mango plantations suffer some damage from this development, but some plantations escaped harm altogether, while other plantations run the risk of losing the entire harvest.

Baise mangoes enter the market immediately after Hainan mangoes. The price of Baise mangoes heavily depends on the price of Hainan mangoes. This year the price of Tainong mangoes from Hainan at the end of the season was around 5.8 yuan [0.84 USD] per 0.5 kg, which is quite high and bodes well for mangoes from Baise. The wholesale price of Baise mangoes could reach around 4 yuan [0.58 USD] per 0.5 kg.
