Gastronomy in the Allgäu has reached a transitional phase

"Around Pentecost sales are expected to pick up again"

The relatively cold weather this spring has also affected the tourist regions of Germany. While large volumes of domestic and imported fruit and vegetable products had already been delivered to the catering industry at Easter 2018, sales are still limited for the time being. In the southern German Allgäu, people also see this as a quiet phase: "We only expect increased sales at Pentecost," a spokesperson from Früchte Jork GmbH, with its headquarters in Isny in the Allgäu.

About a week ago, the regional gastronomy supplier of Belgian cauliflowers switched to the local production of cabbage. After a high-price situation at the turn of the season, meanwhile the market has eased up again. "The demand is continuously the same. By the way, we also have interesting products like artichokes and new-crop garlic. This is being already well received by our regular customers," commented Eren Güney-Marxer, of the wholesalers.

Overall, the sales figures across the entire product range are significantly below last year's level. In 2018, the tourist season was already in full swing, due to the beautiful weather. "April was quite normal, but for May, a slump of 20-25% year-on-year is already being forecast. From week 23-24 or from Pentecost onward, the tourist season here in southern Germany, might get going. The peak season will usually continue until the end of the summer holidays."

A look at the versatile range of gastronomy supplier

Convenience
The wholesaler is a member of umbrella association Servicebund and primarily supplies restaurateurs and large consumers in the region. The company counts to its customers both simple restaurants and company canteens as well as upscale restaurateurs. In addition to the raw products, they also offer a wide range of convenience foods. "The selection is constantly being expanded: our last range extension was the introduction of peeled, pre-cooked asparagus. This was very well received."
