For Juan Manuel Coello, director of the Valladolid-based company Patatas Meléndez, the main goal is to be able to supply new potatoes all year round.
The increase in the demand for quality potatoes has given a boost to the Spanish potato sector, and specifically, to that devoted to new potatoes, which stand out for their superior quality, compared with potatoes for storage.
According to Coello, "the current potato campaign is being exceptional, both in terms of prices and yields." The expected yields are very high, since the weather conditions have been very favorable throughout the crop growth cycle. Regarding prices, the campaign is also very good, since there are no potatoes in storage either in Spain or in the rest of Europe. To be precise, prices "range between 0.45 and 0.48 Euro, although they vary depending on the quality and the variety," he says.
Lastly, he reports that the price of new potatoes is currently in an upward trend, since a campaign with high prices is around the corner and Europe has virtually nothing in stock
