The price of Chinese fruit is unusually high this year. People in the industry explained that there are two main reasons for this development: one reason for the current high price is that seasonal summer fruit has not yet entered the market in large volumes. The fruit market is in the middle of a slow period. Supply from storage is dwindling and fresh supply is not yet dominant. Most of the market supply consists of small domestic fruits and their supply volume is not large either. The second reason for the high price is limited production volume as a result of national disasters and unfavorable weather conditions. Market supply exceeded demand in previous years, but now supply and demand are more balanced.
Take the lychee as an example. People in the industry explained that lychee enjoyed an abundant harvest last year, but this year the harvest was on the small side. The production volume was limited and the price therefore increased. The price of Hainan lychee increased by an estimated 10%-15%. The wholesale price of lychee is around 9 yuan [1.30 USD] per 0.5 kg. However, as lychee from Guangdong, Guangxi, and Fujian enter the market in large volumes in late May and early June, the price will gradually come down.
