8,000 banana plants that were in full production have burned

Unsupervised fires burn organic banana production in Peru

The uncontrolled burning of cane brush has caused a fire that has destroyed 8 thousand trees in a plantation of organic bananas in full production in Buenaventura, northern Peru.

The fire was initiated by workers of the company Agrícola del Chira, popularly known as Caña Brava, who burned dry plants after the harvesting season. This is a common illegal practice to get rid of waste from sugarcane crops that, if done unsupervised, can cause fires in nearby areas.

The representatives of Caña Brava have been indifferent and oblivious to the responsibility of the fire, questioning the origin of the fire.

Resolution 407-2016-MINAGRI of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation makes the burning of sugar cane an illegal agricultural practice due to the damage it causes to the environment and society.
