Market Report Austria KW 20/2019:

'Early potato imports few and expensive, start of winter onion harvest postponed'

The marketing of the Austrian food potato harvest in 2018 has been completed. Occasionally there are still left over batches; these are quantitatively very manageable. The food retailers are now trying to bridge the supply gap with import goods until the start of this season. However, this is not simple in view of the scarce supply situation in Central Europe. On the one hand, an attempt is made to resort to old goods from France. There, however, the storage season is also coming to an early end this year due to strong European demand.

Egyptian and Israeli new potatoes are nearly sold out as well. Meanwhile, there are already Spanish new potatoes. However, there are currently some reservations about their shelf life. The prices of up to €80, - per 100 kg are still too much for many traders. The entire industry therefore longs for the start of the domestic new potatoes season. The wet and cold weather recently slowed down the growth of the new crop.

More onion cultivation in 2019
Due to the cold snap of the last days, the start of the winter onion harvest in Austria was pushed backwards. Therefore, even fewer providers will be able to connect directly to the new season with domestic goods. For the remaining quantities of onion is again paid more.Cleaned and sorted in the box, depending on quality and size, the usual price is now 66, - and 70, - per 100 kg. Estimates on the development of Lower Austrian onion cultivation in 2019 -based on seed sales- suggest that, after the good marketing season, the area will expand by 5 to 7 percent, and the trend towards organic production will continue this year.

Trend towards organic carrots
The marketing of carrots in Lower Austria continues steadily and at unchanged price levels. After replanting areas in 2018 led to a slight expansion of the carrot area, a stable cultivation development is expected starting from seed sales in 2019. The trend towards increased biological production continues.
