Leon van den Hombergh, Frankort & Koning:

"Campaign for melons from overseas is being extended year by year"

The season for overseas melons from Central America will again go on for a little longer this year. "The product quality is still stable and it is fully marketable, and Galia, Cantaloupe and Honey Melons are also available in good amounts and at competitive prices," commented Leon van den Hombergh of Frankort & Koning BV, based in the Dutch town of Venlo. This wholesale supplier specializes in the import of melons from overseas.

Extension of the overseas campaign
Due to the unstable weather in the Mediterranean region, the local producers are having a hard time cultivating their early melons this year. "Furthermore, the production costs in these growing areas are increasing annually," said Van den Hombergh, who in recent years has seen a gradual extension of the 'overseas' campaign. "It is becoming more and more common to see the volume of melons from the Mediterranean region only increase significantly from late May onwards. Until that time, the demands of European food retailers can be easily met with melons from Central America."
