Nogales shipper now offering organic watermelons

The Sykes Company has announced it has expanded its organic program and is now offering organic red seedless watermelon to its customers in the U.S. and Canada.

The watermelons are USDA Organic certified by Oregon Tilth. “After a lot of work on the part of our grower-partners our melons have been certified and are looking great. We are building an institutional knowledge around growing and handling organics that we can apply to our entire business,” said President, Bill Sykes.

The company, which specializes in hard squash and watermelons from Mexico, said it has been investing in its consumer-centric offerings.

“Watermelon has long been a consumer favorite, but it is particularly on-trend due to the popularity of plant-based diets. Plus, the fruit’s unique electrolyte and amino acid properties make its juice an ideal post-workout drink. Data shows that organic shoppers and plant-based eaters go hand-in-hand so we’re thinking our organic watermelons will fit in great,” said Executive Vice President, Lesley Sykes.

The company’s watermelons are available through May and then again in the fall. They come in all standard sizes in 700-lb bins and 65-lb cartons. The Sykes Company has been shipping out of the Nogales area since 1978.
