China: Short-lived price increase for Nanhui muskmelons

The ever popular muskmelons from Nanhui have entered the Chinese market. This year's production volume is around 50 thousand tons, but the muskmelon suffered from unfavorable weather conditions earlier in the season, and the price briefly increased. Furthermore, according to specialists in the industry, the "Elizabeth" muskmelon was once extremely popular among consumers in Shanghai, but even this melon has long been off the market.

The overall surface area devoted to Nanhui muskmelon plantations in Pudong, Shanghai, reached around 1,333 hectares this year. The Nanhui muskmelons are quite round, uniform in color, and sweet because the plantations grow the melons on shelves and use honeybees for pollination.

The Nanhui muskmelon sold 58 thousand boxes last year, around the same volume as the previous year. This year the Nanhui muskmelon entered the market early. The price appears to be rising. The reason for this development is excessive rainfall earlier this season, which affected the growth of muskmelons. Production areas nearby suffered the same weather conditions. The price will show significant decrease when the muskmelons enter the market in bulk in late May.
