The Almeria-based company Ecoculture Biosciences has managed to advance the flowering and fruit setting of Star blueberries grown in the province of Huelva by up to twenty days. This has been achieved in the latest tests carried out with a program based on the foliar and root application of two of its products. By advancing the entry into production, which usually takes place in the months of May and June, it may be possible to obtain greater profits.
The program has consisted in the foliar application of Rainbow Wave and the root application of NHDeltaCa. The first application of Rainbow Wave (200 cc / hl) was made with swollen buds, while the second, of 150 cc / hl accompanied by 150 cc / hl of XStress, took place at the start of the flowering. Rainbow Wave stimulates the distribution of nutrients to fruits and flowers and decreases apical dominance, which facilitates a more natural growth, with shorter internodes, better root development and a greater number of buds, flowers and fruits. The NHDeltaCa root application (5 l / ha) was carried out in the month of January.
The results obtained in this latest test have been very positive, advancing the flowering and fruit setting by at least twenty days compared to control trees which hadn't been treated with these foliar and root applications.
The blueberry variety Star accounts for more than 60% of Huelva's total acreage. The fruit is sweet, it has a large, consistent size and it needs some hours of cold for the floral induction to take place. It is considered a late variety in these latitudes.
In normal conditions, most of the variety's production arrives in the months of May and June, hence the importance of advancing the entry into production as much as possible in order to get higher prices.
In recent years, Ecoculture Biosciences has been achieving great results in the cultivation of blueberries in the province.
