Data from the Xinfadi Market shows a clear downward trend in the prices of round eggplants. The price fell by 19.64% last week as the fresh supply from glasshouse plantations in Suning County in Hebei entered the Beijing market this week. The round eggplants for sale last week mainly came from production areas in Xishuangbanna and Lincang in Yunnan, and Chifeng in Inner Mongolia. Additional supply came from Haikou in Hainan, but only in small volumes.
The surface area of eggplant plantation in Baiyin, Gansu, decreased because the price of eggplants was relatively low last year. Their supply volume is too small to impact the Beijing market. At the same time, the surface area of eggplant plantation in Inner Mongolia also declined. Traders who were aware of this development quickly expanded eggplant plantation in parts of Yunnan. However, Yunnan production areas suffered from continuous rainfall. The young plants suffered severe damage. The overall production volume did not increase at all. As a result, the price of eggplants has been in a high position since the beginning of this year. Only when eggplants from Suning entered the market in large volumes did the price finally come down.
Eggplant supply from glasshouse plantations in Raoyang, Hebei, and Shen, Shandong, will soon enter the Beijing market as well. The supply shortage will then be solved and the price will come down even further.
