Melons: “Volumes outstripping demand”

“The weather having been 80% favorable this year, we started harvesting the Charentais melons on the 25th of March. And so far, the market has been interesting because production was low and the demand was rather well balanced with the offer,” explains Mourad Jabri, manager of Primeur Fraîcheur. But for the past few days, the production has intensified and the market is down. The offer has exceeded the demand which is struggling to grow due to the weak spring weather. “We need some nice weather in France and higher temperatures to boost the demand a little. Especially as we are entering the production peak, which will last for about 2 weeks. It is in the coming days that we will have the highest volumes of melons, which will be picked in a very short amount of time.”

In terms of quality, Mourad is relatively satisfied. “Since the weather was favorable, the quality is good. Because it is mainly the weather that makes the quality, coupled of course with the expertise of the producer.”

Primeur Fraîcheur is a company based both in Morocco and in France. “This way, we control the entire production chain, up to the commercialization. My associate manages the production in Marrakech, for the Charentais melons in Morocco. And I am based in the Drôme, handling the marketing in France and the export to Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands and England. Our melon production is constantly increasing to satisfy the growing demand. We also produce watermelons in Zagoura and a whole range of vegetables in Agadir.”
