Hainan expects first peak in April-May

Hainan bananas enter Chinese market

Some banana producing areas in the south of Hainan, in Sanya, Ledong, and Lingshui, have already begun to supply the market. The overall supply volume is still quite small and the price is not bad. The winter in early 2019 was quite warm, the bananas developed quickly, which is why Hainan production areas are early in supplying the market this year. The product quality is much higher than in previous years.

After years of reorganization the Hainan banana industry now mainly consists of medium and small planters. The scale of the industry neither grows nor shrinks. The overall surface area devoted to banana plantation in Hainan reached 20 thousand hectares divided over Sanya, Ledong, and Lingshui in the south and Dongfang, Changjiang, Danzhou, and Lin'gao in central and north Hainan. Production areas in the south begin to supply the market in bulk around April-May and the others begin bulk supply in May and June. This is on the one hand a conscious decision to structure market supply, but on the other hand also a result of natural differences in climate.

When supply from Hainan begins to dwindle in late June the supply from production areas in Guangdong and Guangxi begins to grow. At that time the supply from many different production areas enters the market around the same time and the banana price is likely to experience large fluctuations. The actual fluctuations will also depend on changing weather conditions, which affect the speed of growth.
