Transport costs reach new heights

China: Banana prices unlikely to rise during Tomb-Sweeping Day

Banana prices have recently been quite stable. There was a slight price increase in production areas in southwest China, but that was barely noticeable. Tomb-Sweeping Day [April 5th, 2019] is fast-approaching and the market is preparing for growing consumer demand. However, prices are unlikely to increase much in response to growing market demand, because transport costs are rising and the supply from Laos and Myanmar encountered difficulties at the border.

People in the industry say that the cost of transport has grown to around 2,000-4,000 yuan [298-596 USD] per truck, which is a price increase of 20%. The number of available trucks declines as drivers go home for Tomb-Sweeping Day, when people throughout China sacrifice to their ancestors in their native town. Furthermore, during the festival period the overall supply from production areas grows, which means that different products compete with each other for the available trucks. These circumstances lead to increased transport costs.
