89% of avocados in Turkey are grown in Antalya where the area devoted to avocado production has now reached 500 hectares.
The Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry announced that avocado production and its consumption are increasing day by day.
The written announcement stressed on the increased productivity due to new techniques and that people consume avocados for health reasons.
Besides its consumption as a fruit, avocado is pressed to get its oil, used in cosmetics and pharmaceutical sector. In 2004, the production was limited to an area of 59 hectares that yielded 252 tons of avocados.
The statement also included the following:
"In 2018, the avocado production increased to 2 thousand 567 tons in an area of 492,5 hectares. Based on these numbers, avocado production increased by 1000% compared to 2004. Farmers grow avocados mainly in Gazipasa and Alanya, but the production is also getting more and more popular in Manavgat, Aksu and Serik districts. The climate in Antalya is very suitable to grow a variety of products. Avocado is grown on five continents in nearly 50 countries. Our Mediterranean coastline offers a suitable climate to grow avocados."
