The first Siclian netted melons have been collected

"Spread over about 60 hectares, the company I lead today was born 3 years ago, but has fifty years of experience, thanks to my grandfather, Salvatore, who founded it, later passing it to my father Angelo. These three generations of daily dedication to our lands currently represent the pride of the family". With this statement, Salvatore Consagra describes the Salvuccio farm, which bears its very name.

As many as 20 hectares of this company are covered by tunnel-protected structures, and are exploited for the collection of netted melons from March to June (the first harvest took place on March 25th); while from August to February they are used to cultivate dark green courgettes.

Netted melon "Rais" variety

"Thanks to the company's wide and open spaces, crop rotation of the arable land is possible every two years. This allows us to grow our fruit and vegetables on fresh, underused and nutritious soil. Thanks to the netted melon "Rais F1" variety from HM Clause Italia SpA, we are able to anticipate the time of collection and be ranked first in Europe, proposing a 100% Italian product".

The company enjoys an enviable position from a climatic point of view

"What may be considered as a mere detail from a distracted person, is actually a great added value in terms of food safety, freshness and organoleptic properties", says Salvatore. He adds that these aspects are all present in the Rais F1 melon, which is characterized by a unique taste, as is the case for many typical Sicilian products. "The particular pedoclimatic conditions contiribute to the quality of our products, as the company is located between the Falconara hills in the territory of Butera (CL) and the sea, which is less than 1 km away."

"The microclimate in this area is mild and ventilated to such an extent that dangers deriving from fungal diseases and attacks of various parasites are nonexistent, allowing us to minimize the use of agrochemicals. Moreover, the company is becoming more sustainable. An example would be the natural pollination by means of the "Sicilian apis mellifera" , the Sicilian black bee (see photo above)".

The annual production of the company, as far as the melon is concerned, amounts to about 4000 tons, while for the courgettes, the total is approximately 540 tons. The markets are the wholesale markets of northern Italy.
