China: Banana prices tail off, but will festival period see another rise?

The banana prices in China's southwestern production areas recently moved towards stability after a long period of growth, even slightly falling. Recent price fluctuations saw an overall upward trend, and the price is still in a relatively high position. Data on wholesale prices of agricultural products throughout China shows that the banana price in end-markets did not show a significant rise in the last month, and even showed a slight downward adjustment.

The transport cost in production areas is clearly rising. In some production areas transport costs around 3,000-5,000 yuan [446-744 USD] per truck. The banana price in end-markets, however, shows no sign of increase. Many banana farmers hopefully await Tomb-Sweeping Day [April 5th, 2019] as fruit consumption is likely to increase during the festival period. People in the industry, however, point out that the banana price is already rather high, and with the increased demand during the festival period also comes increased competition from other seasonal fruits.
