In Alsace, the asparagus, which usually comes out around mid-April, is already pushing out it's tips. Producers are planning to start harvesting two weeks ahead of time. This is due to the mild and dry autumn, followed by a mild winter with a lot of sun in February, but also to the several layers of film protecting the crops.
Producers are however uncertain about how the season will evolve. Jean-Charles Jost, president of the association for the promotion of asparagus in Alsace, hopes that the conditions of the production will make it possible to “extend the season, because it is more important for us economically to have a long, rather than a short, season.”
