Marijn Scholk, Fruitfactor: “Supply of exclusive R10 brand until mid-May”

“Market for Israeli Orri tangerines recovering”

The Israeli Orri tangerine season is in full swing for Fruitfactor in Ridderkerk, the Netherlands. “People are increasingly appreciating this variety. We sell this tangerine under our own R10 brand throughout Europe to a large number of clients,” says Marijn Scholk. “It’s an ideal tangerine to extend the easy-peel season once the most important Clementine varieties have left the market.”

The Orri season starts in week 51/52 and lasts until mid-May from Israel. “The Israeli Orri tangerines are still most appreciated by experts,” Marijn says. Although the variety is grown under licence, availability isn’t a problem, according to the importer. “We selected a number of great growers who pack the Orri tangerines in our R10 brand. We can manage well with these volumes.”

“Perhaps Orri will compete for better flavour with Nadorcott for some consumers, but I personally think the Orri is the tastiest tangerine available. It’s a great tangerine with an exceptional sweetness, but a high enough degree of acidity to have a balanced flavour,” Marijn says.

Fruitfactor sells about 80 per cent of the Orri tangerines to specialists, and 20 per cent to retail. “That’s the exact opposite of the rest of our assortment, which mostly finds its way to retail. We only sell the small sizes of Orri to retail in net packaging,” Marijn continues. “Sales in the Netherlands and all neighbouring countries are actually showing a rising line.”

According to Marijn, the current season had a good start after a slightly poorer period, in part as a result of the extremely large tangerine supply from Morocco. “The supply has now been reduced, and people are really looking for good tangerines, so that the market has recovered, resulting in good price levels.”
