For years, Swiss vegetables have been sold in green Ifco boxes. Starting in June, Migros will only accept black boxes. This makes for red faces among some suppliers.
The change to black boxes is mainly based on marketing reasons. The decision primarily focuses on the nobler color effect of fruits and vegetables with a black background, as well as better compatibility with existing product carriers and shop layouts, according to Migros' letter to its suppliers.
The black container is also lighter and can be stacked more efficiently. "That way, truck space and thus CO2 can be saved," Migros spokesman Patrick Stöpper wrote on request.
Producers afraid of additional costs
Most affected by the change are vegetable producers supplying to Coop and Migros. One of them is Beat Bösiger from Niederbipp. From the 24th of June onwards, he has to fulfil the orders separately in black and green boxes. "However, problems arise when an additional order is made in the afternoon and the color required by the customer is not there," explains Bösiger. Should he then repackage the goods or should he increase his stock room? All this means additional costs, he complains.
Migros, on the other hand, expects there to be little additional costs for the vegetable producers. Also, there will be less damage to the produce because of the higher stability of the boxes, which could save costs.
The affected vegetable producers see that differently. For them it is clear that the this new box system will drive up costs. They are also annoyed that the pledge for the new boxes is 3.80 francs, being significantly higher than the previous 1.50 francs. Each producer has to make that investment, albeit only once. After all, the average rental price of 90 cents per box will remain the same depending on size.
