Falling prices for Chinese bananas

"There are about 3,667 hectares of banana plantations in Chengmai and Lin'gao awaiting harvest, which is an estimated 150 million kg of bananas, based on a production volume of 3000 kg per 0.07 hectare." This is according to Shao Shiwen, former president of the Hainan Banana Association.

The analyst, Mr. Zhao, stated that the demand for bananas declines after Hainan increases the supply of other fruits around Dragon Boat Festival [June 7th, 2019]. The price naturally comes down as well. This is particularly true for the banana supply from Baisha and Changle in south Hainan, which comes to an end around this time. Banana supply from Yunnan is also currently in its final stage. This means that as the supply volume of bananas declines and the supply volume of other fruits grows, the price of bananas comes under pressure and begins to drop.

People in the industry say that more than half the bananas in fruit markets in north China come from Yunnan and overseas. Furthermore, the price of Hainan bananas is under even more pressure as Hainan bananas can not compete with other bananas when it comes to packaging and transport cost.
