Market Report Austria KW 08/2019

Potato storages emptying rapidly, stable market situation on the onion market

The marketing of Austrian table potatoes is progressing rapidly. Rarely have there been thoughts so early in the year about the end of the marketing of food stuffs from the previous year's harvest as people are doing this year. Over the recent weeks, the date on which the warehouses will be emptied, are set forward more and more. The first traders have already completed their marketing this week. Most traders should be done by the end of March. The main reason for the rapid destocking lies in the high, quality-related sortings.

Quiet sales
Sales in food retailing, on the other hand, are steadily rising to a level that is normal for the season. Producer prices were mostly unchanged at last week's levels. In Lower Austria, table potatoes are still mostly sold for € 25 per 100 kg. For wire-worm-free, small package-ready premium goods with the AMA quality seal up to €30 per 100 kg can be achieved. In Upper Austria, last week prices went up to €29 per 100 kg.

Stable situation in the onion market
The Austrian onion market continues to be quite stable. The available supplies are now decreasing relatively quickly. Many farmers are already finished marketing their onion harvest. On the sales side, there is no real new impetus, but in both domestic food retailing and export, a steady business is being reported. After the price increase in recent weeks, producer prices have stabilized at the levels reached earlier. For onions, cleaned and sorted in the box, depending on quality and size, between €48 and 52 per 100 kg is being paid.

Balanced carrot market
The Lower Austrian carrot market was quite balanced around the middle of February. Domestically, carrots can be marketed continuously at unchanged levels. Exports are going on on a manageable scale as well. However, interest from abroad has already increased noticeably in recent weeks. Regarding producer prices, there is no change to those of the previous weeks.
