Preparations for the new campaign started earlier than usual

Beelitz asparagus growers expect first stems at the end of March

It will soon be time again for Beelitz asparagus: on April 11, the season should start - provided the weather plays along. This time the farmers prepared the land earlier than in previous years, said Jürgen Jakobs, chairman of the association Beelitzer Spargel and managing director of Jakob Spargelhöfen in Beelitz (Potsdam-Mittelmark), on Friday, answering questions of the Potsdam Tagesspiegel.

Foil is being spread over the dams, to get more heat into the ground. At the moment, nothing is happening in the soil with the asparagus plants, Jakobs reported. But when the temperatures inside climb to 15 - 20 degrees, the growth of the white stems will be stimulated. "At the end of March, the first Beelitz asparagus can be expected."
