Jan van Bergeijk, Frutas Remolino:

“Market for Spanish raspberries recovers”

The sales of Spanish raspberries is currently going well. “We could say it’s the stablest season in years,” says Dutchman Jan van Bergeijk, who has worked in Spanish soft fruit region Huelva for nearly 30 years. The company Frutas Remolino is part of Plusberries, which includes four companies specialised in strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. Within this group, Jan is responsible for raspberries.

“Late January to early February we had a considerable peak in supply form Morocco, where winter production of raspberries is increasing, but that supply now appears to be stabilising. Prices were very low two weeks ago, but prices levels are now recovering. Because of the good weather in Northwestern Europe, consumption is increasing as well, and supply and demand are well-balanced.”

In Spain, Frutas Remolino has an area of about 70 hectares for the production of raspberries. The soft fruit of Frutas Remolino finds its way primarily to European destinations such as France, Germany, the UK and Scandinavia. According to Jan, the Spanish raspberry production shows a straight line across the line. “I expect the raspberry market will remain stable in the coming weeks. I don’t predict another major peak in production, and if that did happen, the market could absorb it.”
