Philip van Geest, Van Geest International:

"I still can't imagine Brexit causing a heap of trouble for fruit and veg exports"

On 29 March, the Brits will officially leave the European Union. Working groups, meetings, and lobbies aside, Philip van Geest is not too concerned yet. Van Geest is a Dutch fruit and vegetable exporter.

"Some people are just shouting non-stop about dooms day scenarios. However, I remain of the opinion that economic interests are far too important. All the decisions taken by the EU are done so on the basis of trade and the economy."

"It is much ado about nothing," Philip summarizes the fuss. "Brexit is going to happen. However, it seems to me that there will it will cause some serious issues. I rather expect a customs union like Switzerland. Here, cars whose number plates have been electronically registered will continue on through."

"Only, in the first two years, it will be business as usual. The software, personnel, and customs offices are not in place yet. The UK will not want delays as they are not self-sufficient when it comes to fruit and vegetables."

"There is no need for us to export longer-lasting products to the United Kingdom before the Brexit deadline. Our British clients are also not worried. No-one really knows what is going on. So, the Brits have to wait and see too. They will have to make peace with the situation they find themselves in."
