WAPA: Most European countries moving back to a full crop

The World Apple and Pear Association (WAPA) held its Annual Meeting at Fruit Logistica in Berlin, as is tradition, on Friday morning, on 8 February, 2019. It was WAPA’s meeting to discuss the Southern and Northern Hemisphere’s productions forecasts.

It was the first time, USPA fruit company took place on WAPA’s Annual Meeting. Here they discussed the various actions regarding production, marketing, promotion, and sustainability within various countries with representatives of the key global apple and pear producing and exporting countries.

In general, in 2018 European apple and pear crop forecast estimates that most European countries are moving back to a full crop. Also, the World Apple and Pear Association (WAPA) released the 2018 European apple and pear crop estimate. This year, the apple production in the EU is set at 12,8 million tons due to favourable weather conditions. This represents a recovery of 43% compared to last year’s low crop but is only a 5% increase compared to the average crop of 2014 to 2016. The pear crop is predicted at 2,6 million tons, increasing by 6% compared to 2017.

The large crop of apple, and the pear crop, needs to be held against a complex market access situation, given the ongoing consequences of the Russian embargo as well as other market closures or restrictions in the Mediterranean basin.
