Morning hail destroys Cyprus crops

Early on Thursday, a sudden hail storm devastated potatoes, onions and kohlrabi in Cyprus’ Famagusta district. After torrential rain the previous evening, hail fell from 4.00 until 5.30am on Thursday morning, General-secretary of farmers’ union Panagrotikos Tasos Yiapanis said.

He called the results of the weather “a major disaster”. The hail hit Avgorou, Xylophagou and Liopetri. Yiapanis told cyprus-mail.com that the union has called on the agricultural insurance organisation (Oga) to visit the affected area and record the damage.

He added that before, this year was expected to be a good year for potatoes, but the severe weather has now caused a lot of damage.
