Low prices and fierce competition in Chinese mandarin market

The mandarin market faces low prices and intense competition now the Chinese Spring Festival [February 5th, 2019] is over and demand weakens. Online traders have sold Orri mandarins at a retail price of 10 yuan [1.48 USD] per 0.5 kg in the last two years, and the purchase price in production areas reached 5 yuan [0.74 USD] per 0.5 kg. However, the market is sliding and in some production areas the purchase price has taken a dive.

The Orri mandarin is not as popular as Shatang tangerines, and many consumers in second- and third-tier cities are unfamiliar with the Orri mandarin. On the one hand there is market potential, but on the other hand, few people have heard of this brand.

Shatang tangerines become less sweet after Spring Festival and the fruit peel grows thicker. The price is therefore not high. This situation has an effect on other types of tangerines, not just on Orri mandarins. The competition is fierce, for fruit farmers and fruit traders, and although the price of Shatang tangerines is low at the moment, it is uncertain whether the price will remain low or rise again.
