Turkey: Storm might further increase vegetable prices

Erkan Tosun, Vice President of Antalya Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Association said that heavy rains and storms in the city caused a lower production and a lower quality in fruits and vegetables.

Tosun stated that the weather conditions in Antalya may further increase vegetable prices.

Tosun emphasized that farmers spent more for the cost of production while their harvest was lower in volume. He added that the heavy rains and storms of the last few days damaged fields in the city. Tosun warned that this may cause a price increase in fruits and vegetables.

"As of now, there is not much products in greenhouse fields. We struggle with diseases and farmers try to keep their fields productive." Tosun said.

Peppers and aubergines cost 10 Lira
At the wholesale market in Antalya, the prices per kilo are as follows:

Tomato varieties cost 3.50 - 6 Lira (0.6 - 1 Euro), pepper varieties cost 9 - 10 Lira (1.5 - 1.7 Euro), cucumbers cost 3.50 - 4 Lira (0.6 - 0.7 Euro), aubergines cost 10 - 12 Lira (1.7 - 2 Euro), zucchinis cost 5 - 6 Lira  (0.8 - 1 Euro), broccoli costs 3 - 5 Lira (0.5 - 0.8 Euro), cauliflower costs 3 - 3.50 Lira (0.5 - 0.6 Euro), cabbage costs 2.50 - 3 Lira (0.4 - 0.5 Euro), spinach costs 7 - 8 Lira (1.2 - 1.3 Euro), celery roots cost 5 Lira (0.8 Euro), radish costs 3 Lira (0.5 Euro), leeks cost 4 Lira (0.7 Euro).

Anamur was hit by a tornado
Tornadoes which recently caused one person to die in Antalya, also hit Mersin's Anamur district. Banana and strawberry greenhouses in Anamur were damaged by the tornado.
