New brands are rarely seen on the fruit scene. Furthermore, there are few novelties that survive in the long term in this demanding market. That's why new Swiss pear variety 'Fred' might have a better chance. CH201 -Fred's official name- has had an 18-year breeding period behind its belt and now starts its first attempt in the trade. The pear was bred by Swiss research institute Agroscope.
First sales attempt
For the time being, Fred will only be available in Swiss retail in small quantities, for example in Coop and Migros branches. Fred will probably only be offered in larger quantities, starting from 2020. Since the trees planted will only give the desired yield in five to seven years, the companies responsible assume that they cannot give blanket coverage in Switzerland until around 2025. Whether Fred will make it to Germany is not certain, but it does not have to go far.
