The National Superintendency of Customs seized 8,121 kilos of pitahaya fruit distributed in 378 boxes and camouflaged among mangoes. The product, which came from Ecuador and was headed towards Lima, was seized at the Mocupe tollbooth in the province of Chiclayo.
This fruit is protected by the National Service of Health and Agri-Food Quality (Senasa). However, merchants continue to sell it and to smuggle it, due to its high market value. The confiscated cargo is valued at 50 thousand dollars.
Police sources reported that this is the third time they have seized a shipment of this fruit.
