50% government subsidies help farmers to use cold storages

Turkey: Adıyaman exports pomegranates

Thanks to government subsidies, Adıyaman, a city in southeastern Turkey, built cold storages where pomegranates can be stored until they are exported to Germany and other countries.

Adıyaman's Samsat district grows pomegranates and exports them in winter. Two cold storage units were installed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry within the project to support investments for rural development. Pomegranates are sent from the cold storages to Mersin for packaging. Then they are sent abroad.

Mahmut Albayrak, owner of cold storages, said that they were content with the production of pomegranates this season.

Albayrak stated that together with another producer, they were able to build two additional cold storages thanks to the government's fifty percent subsidy on investments for rural development. In the cold storages, approximately one thousand tons of pomegranates can be stored.

Emphasizing that Samsat has suitable conditions to grow high quality pomegranates, Albayrak said they also need to be involved in the packaging and marketing of their products.
