Carlos Arenes: "Frosts can be controlled without damaging the crop"

"Seeking to maximize profitability, growers are increasingly planting their crops in areas with inadequate climates. As a result, they sometimes suffer from extreme heat in summer and other times from very cold temperatures in winter. The lack of profitability is leading us to take more and more risks, planting lemons in increasingly cold climates or avocados or mandarins in areas with a high risk of frost, for example," explains Carlos Arenes, producer and technical engineer, inventor and distributor of the Frost Control system.

"Our work focuses on the development of a climate control system able to protect lemons, avocados or late mandarins from temperatures as cold as -6 degrees Celsius without any damage to the crop. The same system is also capable of lowering the temperature in case of heat waves, for example, from 43 degrees to 27 degrees, so that there is no stomatal closure and no fruit is lost due to dehydration. All this is achieved with a very low volume of water, 12,000 liters per hectare and hour, and a very low pressure of only 1 bar," says the technical engineer.

"With our latest work in the climate control system, we can also arrange winter air nutrition, since these crops need some minimum temperatures to absorb certain nutrients and we supply them via foliar application, so as not to lose production. Crops often suffer malnutrition because of being planted in areas with inappropriate climates. It happens, for example, to avocados in Spanish production areas. Meanwhile, in countries where the climate is milder in winter, the plant can be nourished more easily. To correct this, what we do is arrange weekly aerial applications through the climate control system and that works really well to tackle malnutrition," concludes Carlos Arene.
