Zweer van Aalsburg, FruitMasters:

“Sales of pears stable, sales of apples rising slightly”

Traditionally, the sales of top fruit are a bit patchy in these broken weeks. “The sales of Boskoop apples were very good in the final week of 2018, and demand for Gieser Wildeman pears was also good because of various promotions just before Christmas,” says Zweer van Aalsburg, manager Sourcing & Sales of FruitMasters.

For Elstar and Conference, Zweer expects a slightly rising and stable market, respectively, in the coming weeks. At the start of a new year, plenty of attention is paid to healthy food, and plenty of promotions are therefore planned. The sale of apples is mostly a domestic matter. For pears he sees more extensive sales, from Germany, Scandinavia and the UK to far-off destinations.

Prices for Elstar are around 65 cent for small sizes, and prices for the 75/80 sizes are around 75 cent, with peaks around one euro for Prestige. Prices for pears are around 60 cent for better sizes, prices for small sizes vary greatly depending on quality. “Quality is fairly good. For apples, the later harvests have now left the market, and better batches are now becoming available, but late-harvest batches can still occasionally be found among pears,” Zweer concludes.
