Potato Growers of Alberta Executive Director Terence Hochstein confirms some areas of Canada did have a tough harvest due to cold, wet conditions resulting in these areas being short of their normal production. But according to Hochstein, the industry is really pulling together.
"The potato industry across North America is very intertwined, and anytime that there's an area of some shortage, they usually pull it from other growing areas."
Hochstein said that Alberta has already shipped potatoes to both PEI and Manitoba for processing. He added that some Alberta potato acres were also left in the ground because the areas were too wet, or saw little growth, but that happens every year. According to highriveronline.com, Potato Growers of Alberta has filled all its contracts with Southern Alberta potato processors.
