Jacob Aktalan, MG Fruit:

“Cantaloupes a positive exception on difficult melon market”

Melon sales are currently difficult in general. “The only exception to this is the Cantaloupe melon. Up to two weeks ago, the sales of Galia and watermelon — mostly seedless — went fairly well with good prices, but that has completely changed now,” says Jacob Aktalan of MG Fruit in Barendrecht, the Netherlands.

“The market for yellow melons hasn’t been good from the start, even though that volume wasn’t that different from previous years. Retailers don’t do a lot of promotions, and sales are disappointing when they do,” the importer says. “The low prices are on the free market, good prices are fortunately being paid in programmes.”

“Considering the previous years, sales should recover somewhat after 5 December, but it’s been bad for a longer period now, and it’s like reading tea leaves to find out whether the market will recover in the next few weeks. The volumes being shipped from Brazil make or break the market, but it’s as if more and more people received the melons in recent years. I guess we’ll have to wait and see,” Jacob concludes.
