Reunion: risk of shortages because of yellow vests

The yellow vests movement is causing a potential crisis in Reunion. Indeed, the island is now exposed to a real risk of shortages of basic necessities, even vital necessities, according to the prefecture of the island.

The situation is particularly tense at the moment; the Minister of Overseas territories, Annick Girardin, even had to be rescued by her security personnel as she was meeting with demonstrators.

Today, the prefecture announces that there is a "proven risk of disruption in the supply of staple food and even vital necessities" on the island, "because of the blockage of the Grand Port Maritime" . And this is despite the efforts made to return to a normal situation.

More than a thousand containers are waiting to be delivered. They contain "fresh produce, wheat for bakeries, raw materials for the manufacture of animal feed, medicines and medical equipment for hospitals and institutions for the elderly ...".

Discussions will resume with the yellow vests on the island but this time via videoconference.
