China: Apple price sets new record, trade in seedlings is flourishing

The purchase price of apples is higher this year than it has been in years. The optimism in the apple market also extends to the trade in young apple trees. The North China (Yantai) Fruit Tree Seedling and Production Resources Trade Fair officially opened a few days ago. The fair was much more crowded than in recent years.

More than 160 Chinese and foreign traders involved in fruit products, seedlings, fertilizer, pesticide, horticultural equipment, and technological services participated in the fair. More than 70 thousand fruit farmers visited the fair on the first day. More than a million seedlings were sold. This is the largest fair of its kind in North China.

The interest in this fair is closely related to the excellent market conditions of apples this year. The price of apples set a new record, which is mainly a result of reduced production volume caused by extremely cold weather last spring. The production volume decreased by around 25%. The regular production volume would have reached 43 million tons, but only reached 31 million tons.
