Asian demand

Province of Paita could become Peru's largest producer of grapes

The province of Paita, located in the Piura region, has a great opportunity to become the main producer of table grapes in Peru, according to a statement made by Maersk Line.

"This, because it covers the high international demand, mainly of red grape, on dates when there is no other market that supplies this need for the Asian market," the company said.

It also stated that the Peruvian grape harvest took place in the counter season of the North American harvest and months before the Chilean season, which gives it a greater advantage regarding export volumes.

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri), in 2017 grape shipments amounted to 646.3 million dollars.

Destination Markets
Peruvian grapes are mainly directed to Hong Kong and Shanghai in China, Busan in South Korea, as well as Thailand and Indonesia in Southeast Asia. The United States and the Netherlands are also important markets for this fruit.

"We have reduced our transit times to the Asian markets: shipments to China, Japan and South Korea now take 5 days on average and the time to ship them to China has been decreased by more than a week," said the manager of Maersk Line Peru, Diego Blotte.

Chinese demand
According to the Peruvian Chamber of Commerce of China, the Asian country consumes the largest amount of grapes per capita in the world; and the most consumed variety is the Red Globe.

The participation of other varieties in the Asian market, such as the Seedless varieties, is increasing due to their high quality.

"Since Peru is the fifth exporting country and one of the main suppliers of the Asian market, we expect it will consolidate its performance in the fourth quarter of the year," said Blotte.
